Find your version of Paris
Paris is easier to enjoy when you select a handful of neighbourhoods instead of carrying an endless monument checklist. The Marais works beautifully for a first walk, the Left Bank invites a slower pace, and the canals offer a different kind of breathing room.
Shape a generous day
Begin with an early walk, keep one major cultural appointment in the middle of the day, then leave the late afternoon open. That margin makes room for a terrace, bookshop or garden discovered along the way.
Where to stay
The right neighbourhood depends on the traveller. A central address reduces transport, while a more residential district offers quieter nights and more local life. Begin with Where to stay in Paris, then narrow the choice with our first-visit, couples and under-€150 guides.
Decisions to make before booking
Write down three priorities: the places you most want to see, the maximum number of Metro changes you will tolerate, and the total room budget including taxes. This prevents a photogenic room from winning when it is poorly placed for your plans. For a very short first trip, the Marais, Latin Quarter and Louvre–Opéra sectors are practical; outer areas become worthwhile when the saving genuinely offsets the extra journeys.
